4 Reasons People Don’t Achieve Their Goals
(and, How Perficio Can Help!)
Each year, most people set hundreds of goals, very few of which they actually achieve. The reasons for not achieving goals vary, and while some of it may come down to lack of motivation or obstacles beyond the goal-setter’s control, the vast majority of unachieved goals have very simple (very overcomable) barriers. Join us as we discuss just four of the reasons people don’t achieve their goals, and how Perficio can help.
They Are Not Realistic
The number one reason that people fail to achieve their goals is because they do not set realistic goals. Take, for example, a running goal. For a person who’s never run a mile in their life to one day decide they want to run their hometown marathon next month, even the best laid plan, even the most motivated soul, will fail. It’s great to have big goals, but they should be realistic. Perhaps running the 5k option next month is doable, and setting a goal to run the marathon in 2022 is more on par.
“The path to success begins with a single step”
They Are Not Specific
Of people who reach their goals, it is usually because they are specific and measurable. For instance, if your goal is to open your own business, without a plan and a brand, you’re doomed to fail. By setting specific, measurable goals —I want to open my barber shop— you have a clearer sight picture and can work toward your goals more clearly.
They Are Not Committed
Each year, tens of thousands of people set New Year's Resolutions that look something like, “I want to lose 10 pounds” or, “I want to fit back in these high school jeans.” And each year, tens of thousands of people cancel their gym memberships by March and give up on their goals. Having a goal that is scale or button-driven is not the motivation most people need to stay committed. A goal like, “I want to score the winning goal at my hockey game” or, “I want to deadlift 360 pounds” are goals that motivate you to work toward them, consistently, committed.
They Don’t Apply the Lessons
Whether it’s the latest self-help read, your therapist’s suggestions, your trainer’s workout plan, your pastor’s sermon, or your physician’s recommendations and prescriptions, many people fail to reach their goals because they don’t apply the lessons. The plan is there, posted on the fridge. The information is given, read, recited, and there it sits, unimplemented.
